Women's War Tribe Gi Fiercely Feminine

Hey everybody, my name is Sally Arsenault and I’m a brown belt out of Renzo Gracie Halifax in Nova Scotia, Canada. You may have seen some of my other reviews on Breaking Muscle or BJJbySally.com, but if not, check them out. We’ve done a lot of great reviews on womens jiu jitsu gis and other gear.

In preparation for this guest review for GiReviews.net, I received three of the women’s War Tribe gis for review right before I left for Masters Worlds in September. Unfortunately I was injured at the tournament and still haven’t been able to roll in them two months later! Regardless, I wanted to share this preview with  you so you can at least see all of the thought and detail that was put into the construction of these beautiful gis.

I received the following gis:

Fiercely Feminine gi, size W0 – $214.99

Women’s War Tribe gi, Black and Teal, size W0 – $169.99

Women’s War Tribe gi, Black and Purple, size W0 – $169.99

All of the War Tribe gis fit perfectly right out of the box. I am 5’0 and about 115lbs; size W0 was consistent for all three gis in the length and width of both the pants and jacket. Although I haven’t been able to roll in these gis yet, I have worn each of them to technical training classes for drills and have been please with the comfort and mobility they provide.

All gis have been washed in cold water and dried in the dryer with minimal shrinkage but I feel these gis should be hung to dry over time to preserve the vibrant colors.

Stay tuned for my full review of all three gis and than you to GiReviews.net for the opportunity to provide a guest review!

War Tribe’s Trifecta of Awesome Gis Part 1: The Precision Gi

$

The ocean stirsthe heart, inspiresthe imagination& brings eternaljoy to the soul

Summary

War Tribe Gear has become a staple of the gi market, with super attractive products that feature cutting edge materials.  I was extremely excited to get my hands on not one but THREE of their gis to review and compare.  This review is of the excellent War Tribe Precision Gi.

Disclosures

This Gi was submitted to me free of charge (by way of gireviews.net) for review.  I have never done any work with or for War Tribe.

Generally my reviews are done over the course of 4-8 months to really allow the gi to wear and determine its durability, but for the sake of giving Black Friday shoppers the opportunity to be aware of War Tribe’s offering, I only reviewed these gis for 2 months.  Therefore I cannot speak to their long term durability.

Introduction

20150930_200444

You’ve probably seen our review of the War Tribe Kevlar gi, a bold and stunning product put out only a short while ago.  The company has grown a bit, and has diversified their product offering.  They recently released some sequels to the original Kevlar gi, including the Precision gi.

20150930_194349

This gi along with the others that War Tribe sent me to review are absolutely gorgeous, and all performed very well.  Let’s take a look at some of the finer details of each gi individually.

20150930_204229

Fit

20151002_210238

The War Tribe Precision gi in A3 fits me perfectly.  I generally prefer the A2L size for gis, this gi fit me as close to an A2L as an A3 ever has.  That said, if you are not built like me (6’1, ~200 Lbs), you may be dissatisfied with the fit.  Check your measurements!

Design

20150930_201941

This gi’s color scheme is very clean: White fabric, turquoise contrast stitching and sublimated paneling.  The sublimated yoke panel and slits are basically a gradient turquoise, it almost looks like a tonal tie dye.

20150930_201042

The main logo of War Tribe is a stylized W with a T as the central branch.  They also use the slogan “Born for this” on their company crest which I really like.

20150930_201603

The colors of all three of these gis “pop” nicely, turquoise and white are a great combination.

The gi is simple enough to be considered “modest” but flashy enough to be distinct.  The jacket has the WT symbol on one sleeve, a sort of company crest on the other and the full name on the left side of the chest.

20150930_201555

The feature that sets the Precision model apart from the other two is the presence of Kevlar, which War Tribe put in certain stiching as well as padding in the arm pits and reinforcements in the pants.  This is supposed to contribute to the durability of the gi, but because I didn’t test the gi long term I have no idea if it makes any difference.

20150930_201946

The gi has soft branded seam tape over ripstop on all cuffs, openings and hems.  I like how War Tribe pairs the seamtape with ripstop.

20150930_200934

Jacket

20150930_201849

The jackets that War Tribe sent me are all made of the same ultra soft honecomb weave.  This is by far the softest most comfortable gi material I’ve ever seen, so soft that I was concerned that it would affect the functionality of the gi.

20150930_201743

Surprisingly the fabric doesn’t stretch much, unlike many other similar weaves.  It was a real delight to wear this gi jacket.

20151002_210248

The Precision gi and the Flow gi seemed to have thicker collars than the Black Widow.  I really like a good thick collar.

20150930_201543

Trousers

20150930_200815

The soft 100% ripstop pants are nice, but I feel like War Tribe took a step back when the went from stretchy rope to flat draw strings.

20150930_200912

On the up side, the soft ripstop pants have full length double fabric knee covering which is a great feature.

20151002_210047

There’s not much to say about these pants, they’re comfy and well made.  War Tribe would be well advised to use stretchy rope for the draw strings and to consider putting gi material in the gusset like some of their competition does.

Rolling Performance

20151002_210019

The gi performs like it looks: amazingly.

20151002_210030

The thick collar coupled with the unbelievably soft fabric make for a great rolling experience.  I am honestly sad that the test period is over and I won’t get to keep testing these gis out.

 Conclusion

20151002_210256

If you like the styling of War Tribe, get one, or all, of their gis.  They make a slick and impressive product.  I was really happy to finally get to test their gis out, and each one of them far exceeded any of my expectations.  They are as functional as they are attractive.  For War Tribe’s full product offering, go to http://wartribegear.com/

You’ve probably seen our review of the War Tribe Kevlar gi, a bold and stunning product put out only a short while ago.  The company has grown a bit, and has diversified their product offering.

20150930_204516

The Black Widow gi is a midlevel model, as it doesn’t feature Kevlar, but it is made of the same premium fabrics as War Tribe’s top of the line gis.

20151002_211314

This gi along with the others that War Tribe sent me to review are absolutely gorgeous, and all performed very well.  Lets take a look at some of the finer details of each gi individually.

Design

This gi’s color scheme is relatively simple: black fabric, red contrast stitching and sublimated spiderweb themed paneling/slit lining.

The main logo of War Tribe is a stylized W with a T as the central branch.  They also use the slogan “Born for this” on their company crest which I really like.

20150930_202058

The colors of all three of these gis “pop” nicely, black and red is always an awesome combination, makes you look like a ninja on the mat.

20150930_195714

The gi is simple enough to be considered “modest” but flashy enough to be distinct.  The jacket has the WT symbol on one sleeve, a sort of company crest on the other and the full name on the left side of the chest.

The gi has soft branded seam tape over ripstop on all cuffs, openings and hems.  I like how War Tribe pairs the seamtape with ripstop.

20150930_195007

Probably the coolest part of this gi is that it kind of looks like a spiderman gi, with its color scheme and its red and black sublimated panels, it’s not though it’s the Black Widow gi!

20151002_211339

Jacket

20150930_195705

The jackets that War Tribe sent me are all made of the same ultra soft honecomb weave.  This is by far the softest most comfortable gi material I’ve ever seen, so soft that I was concerned that it would affect the functionality of the gi.

20150930_200111

Surprisingly the fabric doesn’t stretch much, unlike many other similar weaves.  It was a real delight to wear this gi jacket.

20150930_202218

This gi has a thinner collar than its two counterparts, this didn’t really cause me any problems but it was the one discernible difference.  The collar is ripstop over EVA foam.

 Trousers

20150930_195105

The soft 100% ripstop pants are nice, but I feel like War Tribe took a step back when the went from stretchy rope to flat draw strings.

On the up side, the soft ripstop pants have full length double fabric knee covering which is a great feature.

Rolling Performance

20151002_211145

The gi performs like it looks: amazingly.

20151002_211237

I’ve found that this gi and the Precision gi both fit me so well that they outperform a lot of other gis.

20151002_211302

The lightness and softness of the gi makes amazing to wear while rolling.

20151002_210757

The War Tribe Flow gi in A3 fits me well, but not as well as the Precision or the Black Widow.  I generally prefer the A2L size for gis, this gi fit me like most A3 Gis do, that is to say it fits well but is not quite “fitted” to my lanky body.  That said, check your measurements!

20150930_203424

The sublimated fabric on the yoke panel and slits looks almost like an inkblot test, as though someone splattered navy paint on a yellow back drop.  I really like it and I think it’s visually appealing

Rolling Performance

This gi is the baggiest of the three and thus was a bit easier for training partners to grab hold of, that said I’d say that it did not perform as well as the other two, but was still a pleasure to roll in

20151002_210628

The thick collar coupled with the unbelievably soft fabric make for a great rolling experience.  These gis are perhaps the most comfortable that I’ve ever worn.  Seriously.

Inside the Mind Behind Fusion FG

Batman vs the Joker 2

You may have noticed some amazing new rashguards and gis that have come out lately from Fusion FG (Check out our review of their latest gi here).  We even had a chance to do a pretty rad giveaway with them.

I wanted to get inside the mind behind the INCREDIBLE designs, licensing, and branding that Fusion has been doing so I got ahold of Chris Stepchuk, the mastermind behind everything they’re doing.

Tell us a bit about your background with martial arts.

Well, it really started in December 1994. I was in high school at the time, and I watched skinny Royce Gracie tap out the monstrous Dan Severn with a triangle choke at UFC 4. I immediately knew that I had to learn how to do that (if he can do it, why can’t I?), so I enrolled at my local Judo club the next day. Since there was no one teaching BJJ at the time, this was the closest thing I could find. I did Judo for about 5 years before injuries made me bow out (pun intended), as well as Shotokan Karate, earning my black belt in that by around 2002. I then stumbled across a BJJ school in about 2003, and the rest is history :) I’ve traveled down to Brazil 3 times to get my butt kicked there, and have had the good fortune to train at different schools all over the world. Although I am still a brown belt, I am on the 15 year black belt plan :) My daughter just recently started training BJJ as well, so it’s now a family activity!

With the online BJJ/MMA marketplace becoming increasingly saturated, what made you want to start your brand?

Our background is in retail, manufacturing, and licensing. We also happen to be nerds, collecting toys, hockey cards, comics, etc. since we were kids. With all of the grey market BJJ product floating around out there, we really saw the opportunity to create authentic, licensed, and collectible BJJ products that appealed to us. Having worked in the toy industry since I was out of college, I knew that we could bridge the two worlds together, and fortunately the market has responded very favourably to what we’re doing. It’s amazing how many guys and gals contact us out of the blue to tell us how much they love what we’re doing.

Batman vs the Joker 8

What do you feel makes your company different from every other BJJ brand out there right now?

There are some great brands out there right now making some great product. It’s really the golden age of BJJ gear and I wish that even 10% of what’s out there had been available when I started out. We differentiate ourselves by making officially licensed, authentic gear and blends the worlds of grappling and pop-culture. This is our sole focus, and no one else is doing this. Other companies will dabble in licensing, but it will likely never be the core of their brand. Our attention to detail is second to none, and everything must be 100% authentic or it simply won’t make it past the design stage. The licensing approval process is a long one, with many hands involved, meaning that the end product ends up being very thought out, and the quality has to be second to none.

You guys do a lot of homage work with film and video games.  What does it mean to you both in your design, and in life?

The age old question…does life imitate art, or does art imitate life? :) Films and video games have had a massive influence on our lives, and I think that it really comes out in our designs. No one can deny the influence that these genres have had on our generation as a whole, as they have largely shaped our popular culture. We really try to get this across in our designs, so that when people look at our Terminator gi as an example, they immediately get it and can relate to it!

If there’s anything else you’d like to share about yourself or your company, please do!

I think that people should know that we try to be as authentic as possible when it comes to doing what we do, and we really practice what we preach. If you ever come to our office, you’ll immediately be greeted by a life-size Jean-Luc Picard cardboard standee. Our shelves are decorated with action figures; right now Bruce Lee, Superman, and a Storm Trooper are all staring at me :)

Ground Fighter’s Northern Lights Gi: An Amazing Gi from the Ground Up

Summary

For their first foray into the gi market, Ground Fighter decided to go all out and make a real splash with their Northern Lights gi.  This gi is one of the nicest I’ve had the privilege of reviewing!

Disclosures

This Gi was submitted to me free of charge (by way of gireviews.net) for review.  I have never done any work with or for Ground Fighter

Introduction

20150807_113022

I first became aware of the brand Ground Fighter when I saw pictures floating around of their no gi gear, and thought “Wow, this is some cool stuff!”  When I heard they were entering the gi market I was intrigued.

20160110_222153

The Northern Lights gi is an example of a well developed product.  They put a lot of thought into the gi, from the fabrics to the design to the cut, and thus produced a fantastic product!

20150807_113031

The gi arrived to me in August.  It came in a nice drawstring bag along with some stickers.  I tested the gi over a period of about 5 months.

20150807_113140

As a side note, the few gis I’ve come across that are made in China are of amazingly high quality, the Ground Fighter Northern Lights is one of them.

Fit

20150811_085414

This gi is an A3.  As I always mention the very best size for my build is A2L but I can wear A3.  This gi is a very fitted A3 fitting more like my preferred A2L.  If you normally wear an A3 you may want to check the sizing of the Northern Lights gi as it may be off.  In my case it was PERFECT!

Design

20150811_084341

Ground fighter chose awesome materials and an appealing color scheme for this gi.

20150811_085342

The gi top is made of 420gsm pearl weave and the pants are made of nice dense 10oz twill with a pearl weave gusset.

20150810_195848

The color scheme of the gi is as attractive as it is unusual: they went with bright green contrast stitching and stretchy rope, and purple piping and loops.  I love it.

20150810_200340

Throughout the gi and the pants Ground Fighter has featured a sublimated mesh lining made to look like a Northern Lights landscape.

20150810_200252

On the outside of the gi, the styling is simple: the Ground Fighter logo in purple on each shoulder, a special “Northern Lights” logo in purple and green between the shoulder blades and a branded patch near the left hip.

20150810_195840

The pants are just as clean only featuring a single patch on the left thigh.

20150811_084953

All patchwork and embroidery on this gi is phenomenal, it all held up great throughout the test period.

20150811_085453

All of the seam tape is plain twill with the exception of the bottom of the gi top’s skirt, which is branded.

20150810_200239

Jacket

20150811_084801

Ground Fighter set the bar high with the gi material they chose for this jacket.  It’s slated at 420 GSM but it is the softest and lightest normal pearl weave I’ve ever felt.  It feels like some 350 GSM gis I’ve tried out but the weave is coarser and softer.

20150810_200020

The twill covered EVA foam lapel is among the thickest of all of the gis I’ve ever worn.  It is a beefy stiff lapel, which I particularly liked!

20150811_085504

Probably the most prominent feature of the gi is the presence of sublimated mesh lining in the yoke panel and around the skirt slit.

20150811_084801

The only branded seam tape on the gi is at the bottom of the skirt and it says “Ground Fighter” and “Keep your eyes on the stars and your feet on the ground.”

Trousers

20150810_195840

The pants of this gi are lightweight yet very substantial twill.  I really enjoyed wearing them.

20150810_195919

The design of the pants is relatively simple: white with green stitching and purple trim/loops.  There is an attractive patch on the left hip with the Ground Fighter and Northern Lights motifs, and at the piping at the hips they put sublimated mesh like on the top.

20150810_195848

The gusset is made of pearl weave which is always a plus, this aids in submissions from guard.

damage

Something very unusual happened during the test period, the drawstring seemed to rupture at a single point with the inner strings working their way out.  This was a bit of a nuisance but chances are it got caught on something, I can’t fault Ground Fighter for it but it was perhaps the ONLY thing I didn’t love about the gi.

Rolling Performance

20150811_085514

Holy moly this gi was fun to roll in.

20150811_085618

The soft top was a delight, and it was easy to strip grips from the thick collar.  I’m a huge fan of the pants; the dense twill is a pain to grab while the pearl weave gusset makes cinching submissions just a bit easier.

20150811_085642

Once I’ve reviewed a gi I take it out of my rotation, there are some gis that I’ll still roll in from time to time because they’re so awesome, and this is going to be one them.

20150811_085436

Conclusion

If this gi is an indication of what we can expect from Ground Fighter’s gi offerings, then the jiu jitsu community is in for a treat.  I can’t say enough good things about the Ground Fighter Northern Lights gi.

This specific gi has sold out, but Ground Fighter will surely put out more gis in the future.  Check them out at check them out at www.groundfighter.net

War Tribe Gear has had me excited from the very beginning due to their vibrant, yet simple, gi designs. They have released a line of gis designed specifically for women’s bodies and after wearing the gis for months, I can attest to the fact that they have succeeded in producing a comfortable, high-quality product that stands up to the toughest rolls.

Style

All three of the War Tribe gis I was sent are very sharp looking and the contrast stitching really pops. The colors are so pretty that I always washed cold and hung these gis to dry to try and preserve their vibrance. The logo is shaped like an anchor, which is very popular here in Nova Scotia, Canada with other brands like East Coast Lifestyle. I’m not a huge fan of the anchor design myself but they are subtle and blend well with the overall scheme of the gis.

War Tribe has ensured that their gis have plenty of room for team and sponsor patches so they are perfect for the competitive woman on the mats.

Comfort

I’ve been injured since August and now we’re almost to February so I haven’t been able to roll very intensely during these reviews but I have been training a lot and doing lots of fast paced flow rolls. These gis have been very comfortable right out of the bag, with the except of the scratchy  seam tape lining the wrists. I found this tape to irritate my wrists during the first couple of months but after all of the washing I’ve done, they have softened and I no longer notice them. Some ripstop pants become stiff and waxy when wet but the War Tribe pants remained soft for all three gis.

I loved how the Fiercely Feminine gi looked however I have always been nervous about buying a gi with a rashguard liner because I always wear a rashguard, though short sleeved, for rolling and I thought it would be too hot. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that I didn’t notice a difference between the lined gi and the other gis. I usually sweat a lot when I roll anyway so I had worried over nothing. I also enjoyed the smooth feeling of the fabric against my arms instead of the typical cotton weave of other gis and I guarantee women who wear sports bras will fall in love with this gi.

I think the drawstring on the pants really adds to the comfort of a gi. If it’s always coming undone and causing you to stop and retie, it takes away from your rolling experience. War Tribe supplies both a ripstop and a stretchy rope drawstring with each gi so you can choose the one you like best. I like the ripstop drawstring and I find it has always stayed tied. It gets loose after you warm up and your gi starts getting sweaty, but after that initial stretching of the fabric, the retie stays nice and tight.

Quality

I have been rolling in these gis for a few months now and the construction has held up nicely. Shrinkage was not noticeable but I always cold washed and hung to dry. War Tribe has reinforced stitching and fabric at all of the most common stress points: the armpits, the hem splits, etc. and the seams have remained in tact. The only flaw I’ve noticed is a manufacturer’s error on the Fiercely Feminine gi. I’ve been worried that it would unravel over time but it has held up. I might give it a little clear coat of nail polish, just in case. It works on panty hose, so why not? Where I received the gi for free to review, I have not contacted the company for a replacement but I am sure if anyone else had a similar experience, they would stand behind the quality of their products.

Overall, I am very pleased with these gis and I love wearing them to class. I highly, highly recommend them. Gi companies have really been paying attention to what women want to wear to train BJJ and War Tribe has delivered a line of very thoughtfully designed and crafted gis. The fit and style will give you that extra bit of swagger on the mats and though some of us say we don’t care about how we look, we all kind of do, don’t we?

20151002_211255

The War Tribe Black Widow gi in A3 fits me the perfectly, like the Precision Gi.  I generally prefer the A2L size for gis, this gi fit me as close to an A2L as an A3 ever has.  That said, if you are not built like me (6’1, ~200 Lbs), you may be dissatisfied with the fit.  Check your measurements!  Of the three gis, the Flow gi is the one that fits me like most A3’s.

The main logo of War Tribe is a stylized W with a T as the central branch.  They also use the slogan “Born for this” on their company crest which I really like.

The colors of all three of these gis “pop” nicely, black and red is always an awesome combination, makes you look like a ninja on the mat.

Seriously.

The FluxK Toiler Gi: Clean, Simple, Awesome

FluxKThe Art of Simplicity

Summary

A while back we did a brand profile on FluxK, they since sent in a gi for review, their gold weave Toiler gi in white.  This soft comfortable gi is as comfy as it is clean in its design.

Disclosures

This Gi was submitted to me free of charge (by way of gireviews.net) for review.  I have never done any work with or for FluxK

Introduction

I first heard of FluxK in advertisements on some of the BJJ news outlets, I found their clean styling interesting and refreshing.  We also did a brand profile here at gi reviews a while back http://gireviews.net/bob-fluxk-bjj-apparel/ .  Most new brands today are looking for ways to bling up a gi, FluxK on the other hand has toned it down and produced a great product.

20150806_211337

Along with the gi they sent me a teeshirt and a trucker cap, both awesome extras, both featuring their ultra clean, minimalistic logo made to look like a competition mat.

20150810_201030

Fit

20150810_201257

This gi is an A3.  As I always mention the very best size for my build is A2L but I can wear A3.  This gi fits me like an A3, just a bit baggy in some areas, but definitely wearable.  I can’t complain about the fit of this gi, but if FluxK offered an A2L I think it would fit me better.

Design

20150810_201453

Clean is and understatement when describing this gi.  It is a work of simplistic art.  The gi top is made of a white gold weave with absolutely no design or embellishment other than the brand’s logo embroidered on each sleeve and a small branded patch at the bottom of the left lapel

20150810_201433

The pants are even simpler, with just a single patch on the right thigh.

20150810_201439

Other than the brand logo, the color scheme of the gi is black trim on a white gi.

The gi features soft branded seam tape throughout.

20150810_195614

My only complaint about the gi is that some of the trim and the patch on the right thigh all have begun to fray over the course of a 5 month test period.  This doesn’t affect the functionality of the gi.

20160103_200414

20160103_200422

Jacket

20150810_195627

The jacket is made of a beautiful, soft gold weave with black trim.  The gold weave of this gi is slated at 500gsm, so it’s heavy enough to feel substantial but is still light and comfortable.

20150810_195614

The lapel is a nice thick twill covered foam, I actually really liked how the collar performed during rolling, it had that perfect thickness that wasn’t so stiff as to be uncomfortable but not so thin as to be malleable.

20150810_195637

There is soft branded seamtape at the cuffs and at the bottom of the skirt.  It is a nice touch.

20150810_201412

20150810_195705

Trousers

20150810_195408

The twill pants of this gi are a bit short for my personal tastes, but are very comfortable.

20150810_201449

The double fabric on the knees extends halfway down the shin.

20150810_195429

FluxK went with a black stretchy rope and black piping and loops for this gi, keeping with the clean/simple motif.

Rolling Performance

20150810_201325

The twill covered collar coupled with the soft yet substantial fabric made the gi top a pleasure to wear.  Otherwise the experience was pretty as expected.

20150810_201339

I cannot stress enough how nice the gold weave of this gi is, if you’re on the market for a soft but tough gold weave gi I recommend the FluxK toiler!

Conclusion

The FluxK Toiler gi is a delight to roll in.  In a time when flashy gis are often more popular than minimalist ones, FluxK does it right.  If you are on the market for a cleanly designed, comfortable and functional gold weave gi, check out FluxK’s online store!!

The Fusion Fight Gear Mr. Spock Gi is just one item on their consistently growing line of awesome, officially licensed gear based on various franchises.  These guys are on point.

This Gi was submitted to me free of charge (by way of gireviews.net) for review.  I have never done any work with or for Fusion FG.

Introduction

20150921_210835

I’m a sucker for officially licensed products, especially when they relate to something I’m passionate about (like jiu jitsu.)  I first heard about Fusion FG when one of my teammates bought some of their compression gear (specifically their Street Fighter Blanca rash guard and spats.)

I though “Wow, this is a cool concept!  I hope I get to review one of their products!”  And then the magical day came when the Mr. Spock arrived.

20150921_193836

The gi arrived in a nice custom gi bag with Star Trek and Mr. Spock themes on it.  Fusion FG is one of only a few brands that I’ve come across that numbers their limited edition gis, this gi was 295/300.

This gi is a work of art.  The materials they chose are gorgeous, and the Spock/Star Trek theme is on point.

Fit

20150921_220005

This gi is an A3.  As I always mention the very best size for my build is A2L but I can wear A3.  This gi fits me like an A3, just a bit baggy in some areas, but definitely wearable.  I can’t complain about the fit of this gi, but if Fusion FG made an A2L I’d probably prefer that.   I did like the length of the arms and the pants very much.

Design

20150921_220147

The gi features a very fresh and clean design.  The color scheme is white with blue accents and contrast stitching.  It also has various Star Trek and Spock /Vulkan hits throughout.

20150921_193925

The venting, collar piping, and belt loops are made out of a silky synthetic material in light blue.  The seam tape is silky darker blue with Fusion FG’s logo and the image of stars on it.

20150921_214842

This gi has a very fresh look to it and I really enjoyed wearing it.  I got a lot of compliments whenever I’d wear it.

Jacket

20150921_214228

20150921_214551

20150921_215009

The jacket is made of a material that Fusion FG calls “550 GSM Japanese Weave.”  I liked how soft this single weave fabric felt while at the same time being coarse enough to make gripping the gi difficult.  I noted that the fabric chosen for this gi by Fusion FG doesn’t stretch when sweaty, which is a big plus.

20150921_214451

The collar is perhaps my only qualm with the gi, as it is a bit thinner than I’d generally prefer.  It is made of EVA foam covered in the same soft, buttery twill that the pants are made of.  The collar had a slight durability issue, which didn’t affect the performance of the gi.  I put test gis through the ringer, this one was rolled in at least once a week for 4 months.  I personally think that when a collar starts to split in this manner it actually looks kind of cool, so I’m not complaining, just noting.

20160210_215653

As for aesthetic design: the gi has a star trek badge right next to the left lapel.  On the left arm Fusion put a logo that is called the IDIC symbol (Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations) which is really cool because one can say the same thing about jiu jitsu.  On the right arm, the famous “Live Long and Prosper” motto of the Vulkans can be seen with the standard hand gesture that accompanies.  Last but not least, Fusion FG has their logo between the shoulder blades.

20150921_214343

20150921_214738

Like many gis this gi top features a mesh yoke panel.  This yoke panel has various pictures if Spock and features his different sayings.

20150921_214559

The gi top also features a prominent half inch piping running alongside the lapel all the way around.  I like the look of this, and I think it made gripping the collar a bit more difficult.

Trousers

20150921_215450

The pants that Fusion FG made for this product are amazing.  I mean seriously, top notch.

20150921_215136

They list the pants as “300 GSM Double Twill.”  These pants feel like lightweight khaki trousers.  Dense but soft.

20150921_215231

The pants feature full length double fabric cover from above the knee to the bottom of the pant legs.  They also feature a synthetic gusset fabric from the same fabric as the rest of the trim on the gi.  I think Fusion FG would be well advised to go from the synthetic fabric to a gi material gusset for better traction in submissions.

20150921_215309

The Pants feature 6 rope loops on the front but for some reason also have 3 on the back.  I’m not sure why.

20150921_215351

The drawstring has a feature that I’ve never seen before: Fusion FG covered the tip of the rope with sewed on fabric (the same light blue synthetic fabric as the gusset and the trim.)  This feature means that this rope will never fray.  It also looks really cool!

20150921_215154

The pants have a small Fusion FG logo hit on the left leg, and a small patch. The only embroidery on these pants is at the bottom of the right pant leg.  It’s a Vulkan scripture. Awesomeness.

Rolling Performance

20150921_215946

This gi is so comfy and good looking, so rolling in it was always fun.

20150921_220309

Honestly, given the thinness of the collar and the lack of a gi material gusset this wouldn’t be my go to competition gi, but then again given the fact that it’s a limited edition collector’s item even if both were on point; I’d still not compete in it.

20150921_220326

I think the cool points that the gi gets for being an officially licensed Star Trek product give you an automatic advantage when rolling.

Conclusion

20150921_220453

Are you a nerd like me?  Do you enjoy products that are licensed collectors items displaying awesome designs?  Yeah, go to http://fusionfightgear.com/ and stock up.  Their products look as amazing in person as they do online.  The Mr. Spock gi was no exception!

5 Pieces of BJJ Gear That You Can’t Live Without

There are so many items to buy on the BJJ market… What gear is actually worth buying?

There’s a whole market of goods associated with BJJ and in that market there are products that are and are not worth spending your money on.  I remember when I first started training and became mystified with all of the different products and accessories sold on the various web-shops that sell BJJ related products, and I didn’t know which products were really worth the money that I would spend on them.  Here’s a list of 5 products that I can tell you for a fact you may not realize that you’re missing, but will be very happy with once you’ve bought them:

  1. A gear bag specifically made for martial arts gear.  When I first started training I thought my old backpack from high school would suffice.  It was big, durable, had lots of different compartments.  I thought for sure it would be fine for my jiu jitsu gear.  What I didn’t realize was that the wear and tear on a bag used for jiu jitsu is a bit different.  We sweat in our gear and that sweat then permeates our gear bag.  You’re better off getting a bag specifically made for the kind of stuff we use (gis, gloves, etc) as it will very often be made of fabric that is appropriate for these activities.  Also, its compartments will specifically be designed to accommodate the gear we use. Click here to check out some gear bags made just for BJJ.
  2. A good foam roller.  The first time I saw a foam roller I had no clue what I was looking at.  I saw one of my teammates rolling on this PVC pipe with foam ridges on it and it seemed to hurt in a good way.  I tried it out and felt my entire back crack, like an incredible chiropractic adjustment.  I since bought a few foam rollers, one with hard spikes on it, one with softer foam ridges.  These are crucial to both pre and post work out exercise.  A good foam roller is priceless and I have a small one that goes with me to every tournament.
  3. A mouth guard.  This may seem like a no brainer to many, but I’ve actually seen people COMPETE without mouth guards.  That’s dangerous.  Teeth are very important and very expensive to fix, do not roll without a mouth guard.  Trust me on this.  There are many brands, makes and models of mouth guards, and all I have is a cheap 10 dollar boil and bite, but I know that it has saved me from many injuries. Click here to check out a few awesome BJJ mouthguards.
  4. A good, versatile compression wrap that accommodates ice packs.  We beat ourselves up on a daily basis, and very often our joints suffer.  In many cases, simply icing the area of a minor injury can help heal it much faster.  Granted there are injuries for which physical therapists are now recommending AGAINST icing, but the severity of most injuries can be reduced by compression and icing.  There are wraps made specifically for this purpose and they are a good investment for any serious jiujiteiro. Click here to check out a few compression wraps just for BJJ athletes.
  5. Knee pads.  I’m serious about this: when we train we put a LOT of wear and tear on our knees, whether or not you realize it.  Wearing a simple knee sleeve on each knee can make a HUGE difference as they protect your knees from trauma while at the same time help keep your knees warm.  Your joints contain fluid called synovial fluid which functions to protect the joints, if the joint is warmed up prior to exercise chance of injury is lower.  Knee pads help with this. Click here to check out a few of our favorite BJJ knee pads.

These are just 5 accessories that, if you don’t have, you might want to consider making an investment.
